Join us for an entertaining and informative weekend of independent film at the Capri Theater on Friday night, August 16th and all day Saturday, August 17th. Please note that there will be three registration options on the following page. All film screenings are free, but registration is encouraged so we can keep track of audience size. Attendance at the workshops on Saturday will require a ticket.

A SONG FOR IMOGENE Free Screening

Cheyenne, a fallen-away musician, is newly pregnant and wrestling her way out of a suffocating trauma bond with an abusive boyfriend. She flees in the night back to her dying home town where she reunites with her estranged sister and nephew, while reigniting her passion and dream of a life out west. When her boyfriend discovers where she is, Cheyenne must come face-to-face with her past in order to reclaim her future.

A poignant, gritty observation of rural life, A Song for Imogene celebrates the female bid for independence while remaining true to the challenges faced by people society has left behind.

The Mississippi Film Society and the Mississippi Film Office are pleased to invite you to a free screening of A Song for Imogene on Friday night, August 16th, at 7 pm at the Capri Theater. Tickets are first-come, first-served and are limited to four per order. Food and drink will be available for purchase at the theater. Following the screening, writer/director Erika Arlee and lead actress/producer Kristi Ray will join us for an in-person discussion and Q&A about A Song for Imogene and their work as the filmmaking duo behind Honey Head Films.

INDIE FILM FORUM

Join us the following morning, Saturday, August 17, at 8:30 a.m. back at the Capri Theater for a full day of panel discussions about independent filmmaking, directing, and acting. We will conclude the day with a showcase of short films made by Mississippians. The fee for both workshops is $25. The short film showcase will be free and open to the public.

9:00 – 9:30 a.m.: Check-In with Coffee and Pastries (Capri Theater Lobby)

9:30 a.m – Noon: Hindsight 2020: An Indie Filmmaking Retrospective (Capri Theater)

Writer/director Erika Arlee and producer/actor Kristi Ray of Honey Head Films will lead a workshop breaking down the arc of scaling a zero budget short concept into a calling card feature film. This presentation and talkback encompasses a high-level overview of building a brand that people want to invest in and laying the foundation for a filmmaking career one season at a time. Through an enlightening, informative and entertaining discussion, participants will learn how to reverse engineer your most audacious creative goals.

Noon – 1:30 p.m.: Lunch (On your own in the Fondren neighborhood)

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: The Business of Acting Workshop (Capri Theater)

Building the scaffolding for a career as a working actor in the Southeast, some of the most common questions aspiring actors ask are, “How do I get started in the biz” or “How do I make the leap from day player to lead cast?” Learn from an award-winning, seasoned actress sharing years of insight, hacks, tips, and tools to help you build a sustainable career as a professional on-camera performer. This presentation will cover everything from getting an agent, building your reel, and mastering on-set etiquette to knowing how and when to produce your own content in order to “get your foot in the door.”

2:30 – 2:45: Break

2:45 – 3:30: A Conversation with the Mississippi Film Office (Capri Theater)

Participants will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the Mississippi Film Office about filmmaking here in Mississippi and the current state of the industry and to discuss current and upcoming projects.

4:00 – 6:00: Mississippi Short Film Showcase and Filmmaker Conversation (Capri Theater)

We will conclude the day with a showcase of Mississippi-made short films and a conversation with the filmmakers.
